CereGate

Munich company developing software that delivers a freezing-of-gait therapy for Parkinson's disease through patients' existing Boston Scientific deep brain stimulation implants. An unnamed US medtech company led its Series C, announced on 14 October 2026.

Overview

CereGate was founded by Bálint Várkuti and is led by chief executive Matthias Puls. It calls its approach a computer-brain interface: software that sends signals into the nervous system through approved implants, which the company says reduces the need for further surgery. CereGate says its platform has been tested in more than 85 people, and it also conducts research in spinal cord stimulation.

The therapy and trial

In the US trial (NCT05292794), patients keep conventional stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus from their existing implant while added bursts of stimulation act as a cue to keep walking. CereGate’s software proposes settings for the clinician to test and helps record each patient’s response; it has no control over the implant’s output. The open-label, single-arm study began in April 2022, is recruiting at seven US centres including Northwestern University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and plans to enrol up to 41 people. It accepts only patients with Boston Scientific Gevia or Genus R16 pulse generators.

Latest

On 14 October 2026 CereGate said an unnamed US medtech company had led its Series C, with existing investors and Impact Ventures of Budapest taking part. Earlier backers include 468 Capital, re.Mind Capital, TruVenturo, Heal Capital, High-Tech Gründerfonds and CARMA Fund. The amount and valuation were not disclosed.

Why it matters

If the lead investor makes deep brain stimulation systems, the round ties a hardware maker to a therapy that runs on implants already in patients. CereGate’s FDA Breakthrough Device status is unclear: High-Tech Gründerfonds announced the designation in January 2022, while CereGate’s website describes the company as pursuing it. No efficacy data, regulatory route or submission timeline has been published.
