Six-month-old Chinese BCI startup raises RMB 330 million angel round

Six months after being founded in February 2026, Shanghai Active Technology closed a RMB 330 million angel round. The company announced on 3 August. Both 36Kr Medical Insight and Gasgoo’s Seeds startup column picked it up on 4 August. 36Kr describes the raise as refreshing the angel round financing record in China’s brain-computer interface sector. Gasgoo describes it as a record haul for the BCI sector in China.

The lead investor was not disclosed. Post-money valuation was not disclosed. Use of funds, per the company, covers site expansion, equipment upgrades, clinical trial advancement, and team growth.

Who the company is

Shanghai Active Technology Co., Ltd. is headquartered in Shanghai with a 2,500 square metre office plus GMP facility. Company plans call for a new 10,000-plus square metre headquarters by the end of 2026 and headcount growth beyond 100.

Chief executive is Wu Guojia, reported by Gasgoo as bringing extensive industrial experience in Class III medical devices. Core technical team named in the coverage: Jia Jing, Zhao Bin, Yi Guoliang. Academic affiliations were not disclosed in either source.

The company is building along the invasive-BCI path, in a full-link configuration that spans flexible electrodes, dedicated chips, decoding algorithms, and system integration. This places it in the same category as StairMed, Neuralink and We-Linking rather than the semi-invasive (Neuracle, NeuroXess, NeuCyber) or non-invasive (BrainCo, Gestalt Technology) cohorts.

The product pipeline

Three product lines are named in the coverage: motor, visual, and emotional. The lead product is Tianshu, a 1024-channel invasive motor BCI targeting stroke, spinal cord injury, and ALS indications. Tianshu has obtained a type inspection report for the 1024-channel invasive brain-computer system. Clinical trials are described as preparing to launch, not yet under way. If the trials do launch as planned, Gasgoo notes the company would be the first in China to conduct clinical trials for a 1024-channel invasive BCI.

For context on channel count: Neuracle’s NEO is epidural semi-invasive with lower channel count than fully invasive systems. StairMed’s WRS02, launched December 2025, is 256-channel wireless. Neuralink has publicly targeted 3,000 electrodes in 2026 and 25,000-plus by 2028. Active Technology’s 1024-channel Tianshu sits between StairMed and Neuralink on channel count, subject to actual clinical validation.

Where it sits in the Chinese BCI landscape

36Kr Medical Insight’s “16 Most Notable Domestic Chinese Enterprises in the Invasive BCI Industry” list, published the day after the Active Technology raise, places Active Technology at the top of the “8 Complete Machine and System Companies” segment with the label “Highest Financing Popularity.” 36Kr disclaims that the list is not a ranking.

The 36Kr piece also notes that BCI has been included in the Chinese government’s 2026 Work Report as a target technology, and describes BCI as “the hottest track in the medical health sector this year.”

What this means alongside the Delian piece

The Active Technology angel round landed two days after Delian Capital partner Jiang Donghui published her Chinese BCI bubble-cycle warning in VCBeat, which cited IT Juzi data showing H1 2026 accounted for approximately 60 per cent of the Chinese BCI sector’s thirteen-year cumulative financing.

Active Technology fits the pattern Jiang was flagging. A record angel round with no disclosed lead investor, closed by a company incorporated only six months earlier, is compressed even by 2026 Chinese BCI standards. The company has a type inspection report and preparing-to-launch clinical trials, which is credible technical progress for that time window but is not yet clinical readout. The gap between technical positioning at this stage and the size of the angel round is what Jiang’s matrix was designed to sort.

Two things to note before reading either the raise or Jiang’s warning as directional signal.

First, Jiang’s piece and the Active Technology round are not connected. VCBeat is not Delian Capital’s platform, Delian is not named as an Active Technology investor, and Jiang did not name Active Technology in her piece. The chronological adjacency is coincidence, not correspondence.

Second, “record” holds only for the single-angel-round category. Gestalt Technology’s RMB 420 million round in July 2026 was an angel+, a follow-on. StairMed’s H1 2026 Series B was reported around RMB 350 to 500 million with Alibaba and Tencent among named investors. Neither is directly comparable to a pure angel round, and Active Technology’s RMB 330 million does read as the largest single angel-round data point in the sector’s public record.

What to watch

Three near-term items matter for reading the Active Technology raise properly.

First, the lead investor. A record angel round without a named lead is unusual. Publicly identifying who priced the round will materially change how it reads. If a Chinese sovereign-adjacent fund led, it fits the industrial-builder posture. If a specialist BCI VC led, it validates the technical thesis. If AI-crossover capital led, it reinforces Jiang’s warning about capital without domain understanding.

Second, when clinical trials actually start on Tianshu. Type inspection report is a regulatory milestone. First patient enrolled is the operator-tier milestone that Neuracle, StairMed and NeuroXess have already passed. Active Technology’s transition into active clinical status is the read on whether the RMB 330M is buying a clinical-stage operator or a still-preclinical one.

Third, whether other Chinese BCI angel or seed rounds cluster around similar magnitudes in the next four weeks. If they do, Jiang’s H1 2026 compression continues into H2 and the bubble-cycle risk profile deepens. If Active Technology sits alone as an outlier, the concentration was already reflected in the H1 numbers Jiang cited.
