Weiling Medical raises over RMB 100 million for its surface-electrode brain implant

Shenzhen’s Weiling Medical Technology (微灵医疗) closed a new funding round of over RMB 100 million on 17 August 2026. Lead investor is Junzhong Capital. The core industrial investor is Innotek (688253.SH), a STAR Market-listed company participating via the Jiaxing Innotek Industrial Fund. Neither the round’s series designation nor the exact amount was disclosed. Prior investors in Weiling include Gaorong Capital, Life Park Venture Capital, CDH Investments and Lihe Sci-Tech.

Weiling develops a fully implantable, medical-grade brain-computer interface built around a flexible thin-film cortical electrode about 10 microns thick and several centimetres across, laid on the cortical surface rather than penetrating brain tissue. The system is wirelessly powered and transmits cortical signals to an external controller and neurostimulator, with downstream connection to assistive effectors such as an exoskeleton.

Surface electrode, not penetrating probe

Weiling’s approach sits in a different category from most of the Chinese commercial BCI cohort. StairMed’s WRS02 (256-channel wireless intracortical, 18 human implants at Huashan), Neuracle’s NEO (NMPA-approved 13 March 2026), NeuroXess Triple-Full, NeuCyber Beinao No.1 and Shanghai Active Technology’s Tianshu 1024-channel program all penetrate cortical tissue with rigid or semi-flexible probes. Weiling’s electrode is epicortical. A flexible film sits on the cortical surface. That places Weiling closer to the surface-array approach used globally by Precision Neuroscience than to the intracortical approach used by Neuralink, Blackrock, Paradromics or Synchron. The channel count of Weiling’s array has not been publicly disclosed.

The founder and the thesis

The scientific lead and founder is Dr Li Xiaojian. Li previously held academic appointments at the Medical College of Georgia and the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University for nearly a decade before returning to China. Per 36Kr’s reporting, after returning to China Li joined the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS-SIAT) and is now a dual-appointed professor at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Center for Brain Science and Brain-Inspired Intelligence at Southern Medical University and Zhujiang Hospital in Guangzhou.

Weiling was founded in 2019.

The June 2026 Guangdong first-in-human, as reported by the company

Per Weiling’s own account carried in 36Kr’s exclusive coverage on 17 August 2026, a hospital in Guangdong province completed a first-in-human implantation in mid-June 2026 in a patient with locked-in syndrome from a brainstem haemorrhage sustained approximately 18 months earlier. The company reports that after one week of training followed by four weeks of BCI-mediated treatment, the patient regained forearm and wrist movement and pinch-grip capability on the left upper limb. The hospital has not been named publicly. No peer-reviewed publication has been cited.

The device is described by the company as being at Investigator-Initiated Trial (IIT) stage, distinct from the formal NMPA-registered clinical trial pathway that Neuracle NEO completed before its March 2026 marketing approval.

Regulatory pathway on the diagnostic device

Separate from the implantable therapeutic BCI, Weiling has a flexible thin-film cortical electrode array and high-throughput intracranial EEG system in Class III medical device registration. Per the company, this diagnostic device is expected to reach marketing approval in the next one to two years. Class III is the highest risk classification under China’s medical device regime and requires clinical trial data, quality-management-system audit, and NMPA review before commercial sale.

Where Weiling sits in the Chinese BCI commercial arc

The 17 August round adds another commercially funded Chinese invasive BCI operator to the visible landscape. StairMed, Neuracle, NeuroXess, NeuCyber and Shanghai Active Technology hold the intracortical and semi-invasive positions. Nankai University (Duan Feng team, first-in-human 22 June 2025 at Fujian Sanbo Funeng Brain Hospital), Xuanwu Hospital (Duan Wanru) and StairMed’s separately announced sheep-stage endovascular research programme hold the endovascular positions. Weiling is the first funded Chinese entrant on the epicortical surface-electrode approach in this cohort.

The financing, the PICC Property and Casualty commercial insurance policy for invasive BCI surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, and China’s first foundational BCI national standards (GB/T 47023-2026 and GB/T 47127-2026) all took effect between 1 and 17 August 2026.

What to watch

Whether Weiling’s Class III registration for the diagnostic electrode array clears NMPA on the company’s one-to-two-year timeline. A registered device would be Weiling’s first commercial product and would validate the flexible-film manufacturing pipeline before the therapeutic implant reaches formal NMPA trials.

Whether the mid-June 2026 Guangdong first-in-human is followed by a named-hospital, peer-reviewed clinical report. Company-reported outcomes from a single patient are preliminary. A published multi-patient cohort with independent clinical adjudication is what moves this from company milestone to defensible clinical result.

Whether Innotek’s industrial-fund participation translates into a manufacturing or supply-chain relationship for Weiling’s thin-film electrode. STAR Market-listed strategic investors typically bring more than capital, and the industrial integration, if any, will show whether this round is purely financial or the first step of vertical integration.
