Chinese BCI programmes produced four tangible results in July

On 13 July, a Shanghai neurosurgery team wrote the world’s first commercial prescription for a surgically-implanted brain-computer interface, using an NMPA-approved Neuracle device. On 29 July, Xinhua’s English feed reported that a tetraplegic in Shanghai and an art teacher in Nanchang had played a game of Chinese chess 800 kilometres apart, using only brain signals. On 30 July, Global Times reported that three quadriplegic patients in a separate Shanghai trial had started doing paid remote work through their implants. And at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July, a paralysed fine-arts graduate from Shenzhen demoed a mind-controlled wheelchair he had built himself, using a self-taught embedded stack and LLM-assisted DIY.

Four separate Chinese brain-computer interface programmes each produced a clinical or user result in July. They span the full invasiveness ladder, semi-invasive on two rungs (Neuracle commercial and NeuroXess clinical), fully invasive on one (StairMed), and non-invasive on one (Wang Ning). They come from different institutional layers and target different patient populations. Together they read as the Chinese BCI ecosystem showing capability across the whole field within four weeks. In the same window, BrainCo debuted its brain-to-robot AI R&D platform at WAIC 2026 on 17 July, covered separately on 18 July. That was a developer-platform launch rather than a clinical or paying-patient outcome, and sits outside this cohort.

Neuracle, world’s first commercial prescription

Neuracle Medical’s NEO system was approved by NMPA on 13 March 2026 as a Class III implantable BCI for hand motor function compensation after high cervical spinal cord injury. On 13 July, a neurosurgery team at Huashan Hospital, affiliated to Fudan University, wrote the first commercial prescription for the device. The patient had lost hand function in a car accident approximately ten years earlier.

This is the first commercial prescription for a surgically-implanted brain-computer interface anywhere in the world. Neuracle is a Tsinghua-founded semi-invasive operator with operations across Beijing, Shanghai and Changzhou. Its STAR Market IPO application was formally accepted by the Shanghai Stock Exchange in June 2026, seeking to raise approximately RMB 2.5 billion. NeuroXess, Shanghai-Nanchang xiangqi

The NeuroXess chess demonstration was disclosed in Chinese business press in June 2026 and re-run in Xinhua’s English feed on 29 July. Two implanted patients played across 800 kilometres.

In Shanghai, a patient identified as Xiao Zhang, tetraplegic for eight years and wheelchair-bound, was implanted with the NeuroXess Triple-Full system at Huashan Hospital in late 2025 as the first clinical case of the system. Triple-Full is NeuroXess’s product name for fully-implanted, fully-wireless, fully-functional. Zhang controlled a virtual chess board with his brain signals. Commands transmitted 800 kilometres to Nanchang, where a small robot moved the physical piece on the opposing board.

The opposing player, identified as Teacher Deng, is a former art teacher who lost hand motor function in an accident. Deng was implanted with the same NeuroXess system in December 2025 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University, in a procedure led by Professor Li Meihua under the guidance of Professor Mao Ying from Huashan. Deng used a BCI-controlled exoskeleton glove to grasp real chess pieces on the same physical board Zhang was moving through the robot. In prior sessions with the same exoskeleton, Deng had written Happy Birthday characters for his young son and drawn a family portrait, per Xinhua coverage in May.

NeuroXess reports 50-millisecond end-to-end system latency across signal acquisition, decoding, transmission and terminal execution. The company is Shanghai-based and linked to the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, positioned in the semi-invasive category alongside Neuracle. It has announced a planned Jiangxi factory with target production capacity of 10,000 systems per year.

This is not the first BCI chess. BrainGate participants have played chess-format tasks since the mid-2000s, and Neuralink’s Noland Arbaugh played chess in a March 2024 livestream. What is new is the cross-city, patient-versus-patient format, with an asymmetric interface pairing a virtual board on one end with a physical exoskeleton on the other.

StairMed, three quadriplegic patients doing paid remote work

Global Times reported on 30 July that three high-level quadriplegic patients in a Shanghai StairMed trial had returned to remote work. All three are named. Zhang handles customer phone calls through an e-commerce logistics backend. Li and Zhao perform vending-machine backend work, annotating data on items purchased by watching videos. The tasks are data-annotation-adjacent and generate income for the patients.

The device is StairMed’s WRS02, described by the company as a 256-channel wireless implantable BCI. StairMed reports the implant at 26 millimetres in diameter and less than 6 millimetres thick, with ultra-flexible electrodes at approximately 1/100 the diameter of a human hair. Command latency is reported under 50 milliseconds. Information transfer rate is reported at 380 bits per minute. Continuous work sessions run three to four hours. The system runs plug-and-play with Windows and iOS.

StairMed’s clinical status is investigational under NMPA’s Innovative Green Channel, distinct from Neuracle’s commercial NEO. The ongoing RISE pivotal trial targets 40 implants during 2026. The company raised RMB 500 million (approximately US$72.8 million) in early 2026 in an Alibaba-led round with Tencent participating.

Return to work via implantable BCI is not a world first. BrainGate participants have used computers for years, and Neuralink’s Noland Arbaugh has been publicly documented using computers since 2024. The Chinese cohort is the first reported doing remote work that generates income, and the most advanced clinical demonstration to date of implantable BCI producing economic productivity in China.

Wang Ning, Shenzhen, DIY mind-controlled wheelchair

The Wang Ning story is a different kind of signal. Wang, 33, is a fine-arts graduate from Shenzhen who previously ran an art-education business. In 2020 he was diagnosed with a 13-centimetre spinal cord tumour. Two major surgeries left him fully paralysed twice. He gradually regained the ability to walk through rehabilitation.

In 2022, Wang started teaching himself brain-computer interface technology using books and online resources. He learnt embedded development, circuit soldering, 3D printing and AI algorithms from scratch, using large language models as tutors and code assistants. He had no prior formal software or hardware engineering background.

The wheelchair uses a non-invasive EEG headband combined with facial muscle signals, processed through his own algorithms. It is not built on any commercial BCI product. He entered it into the 2026 REDHackathon, the Xiaohongshu corporate hackathon held at Zhangjiang Science Hall in Shanghai from 7 to 10 April 2026, with a 500,000-yuan total prize pool. He won first prize in the hardware category. The hackathon version supported straight-line movement only. After three months of upgrades he added turning control.

He demonstrated the system publicly at Huawei Developer Conference in Dongguan from 12 to 14 June 2026, and again at the World AI Conference in Shanghai from 17 to 20 July 2026, which is the July anchor for this piece. He plans to open a rehabilitation centre using electrical-stimulation suits and exoskeletons, and has not commercialised the wheelchair or announced open-source intent.

This is not a technical first. Mind-controlled wheelchair prototypes go back to Toyota, EPFL, Tsinghua and various academic groups since the early 2010s. What is new is the profile of the builder: a paralysed non-technical solo operator producing a working prototype in 48 hours with LLM-assisted DIY, iterating it further and demoing at national-level industry events within three months.

What connects the four

Each programme sits on a different rung of the BCI technology ladder. Neuracle is commercial semi-invasive, shipping to paying patients under NMPA Class III approval. NeuroXess is clinical semi-invasive, running under NMPA regulatory oversight with academic hospital partners. StairMed is fully invasive clinical, under NMPA Innovative Green Channel, with major commercial capital backing. Wang Ning is non-invasive citizen-science, funded by hackathon prize money and self-education.

The Issue 01 four-jurisdiction analysis characterised China’s BCI posture as industrial builder, marked by state-directed capital plus regulator-cleared operators. Neuracle, NeuroXess and StairMed all fit that reading cleanly. Wang Ning’s story adds a dimension that was not in Issue 01: the LLM-assisted solo builder, working outside institutional pipelines, producing hardware that reaches the same commercial-adjacent stage as an early startup would.

Four operator moments in four weeks is a cadence worth noting alongside a comparable cluster of western operator moments in the same window (Precision Neuroscience naming Donoghue scientific advisor on 25 July, ABILITY Neurotech first-in-human at TUM Munich on 24 July, Neuvotion NeuStim commercial launch on 27 July, Neuralink publishing wheelchair operation footage on 29 July). Both cohorts are producing dense July flow; the Chinese cluster is distinctive for pairing clinical demonstrations with paying-patient and paid-work outcomes rather than trial-status or exec-hire milestones.

What to watch

Three near-term milestones matter through Q3.

First, whether the Neuracle NEO commercial supply expands from a single prescription into recurring flow. Second-prescription and beyond will determine whether 13 July was a one-off marketing moment or the start of a repeatable commercial cadence. Neuracle’s STAR Market listing, if it prices, would be the first directly-quoted BCI operator on the mainland.

Second, whether StairMed’s RISE trial hits its 40-implant 2026 target, and whether participants continue expanding into paid work rather than one-off demonstrations. That is the read on whether Chinese invasive BCI is moving from proof-of-concept to durable clinical operation.

Third, whether the Wang Ning pattern replicates. Guangdong has announced plans for ten leading One Person Company ecosystems in 2026, rising to one hundred by 2028. If Chinese policy actively supports LLM-assisted solo builders in hardware categories, expect more hackathon-tier BCI stories over the next twelve months. Wang’s tier of the ecosystem competes with the western consumer-EEG cohort on accessible non-invasive BCI, from a lower cost base and a faster iteration cycle, rather than with Neuracle, NeuroXess or StairMed on invasive clinical performance.

The Chinese BCI ecosystem was tracked in Issue 01 as an industrial-builder posture producing clinical operators. July shows that posture producing four operator signals in one month across the whole invasiveness ladder. What matters going forward is whether the cadence holds, whether the invasive clinical work translates into revenue, and whether the grassroots tier turns into a competitive non-invasive layer.
