Apple acquires neural-sensor startup Sonera Magnetics

Apple has acquired Berkeley-based magnetic-sensor startup Sonera Magnetics, its first known neural-sensor company. The transaction closed in May 2026 and became public on 8 September 2026 through the European Commission’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) acquisitions database, the Article 14 self-notification regime that requires designated gatekeeper platforms to notify the Commission of any acquisition regardless of value. Apple has not issued a press release. Sonera has not issued a statement. Sonera’s website (sonera.io) was taken offline after the deal closed. Deal terms were not disclosed.

The company

Sonera Magnetics, Inc. was founded in 2018 by Nishita Deka (Chief Executive Officer, EE PhD, nanoscale devices and 2D materials) and Dominic Labanowski (Chief Technology Officer, EE PhD, magnetic devices and multiferroics). Both completed their doctorates in Sayeef Salahuddin’s lab in UC Berkeley’s Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department, and Salahuddin is a scientific co-founder. The company was a Cyclotron Road (now Activate) fellowship company at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Sonera exited stealth in September 2023 with an US$11 million seed round, its only disclosed financing round. The seed syndicate: Founders Fund, Benchmark, IVP, Amplify Partners, Craft Ventures, 8VC, 9Yards Capital, Adverb Ventures, Amino Capital, Broadway Angels, Electric Capital, and foobar.vc.

The company’s technology is acoustically-driven ferromagnetic resonance (ADFMR) magnetometry, a solid-state approach to measuring weak biomagnetic fields that operates at room temperature without cryogenic cooling or magnetic shielding. Conventional magnetoencephalography (MEG) uses SQUID sensors that require liquid-helium cooling to approximately -270°C inside heavy shielded rooms and costs in the millions per installation. ADFMR magnetometers couple magnetic thin films with high-frequency acoustic waves to achieve field sensitivity in a chip-scale, wearable form factor. Sonera’s product roadmap centred on the S1 chip, initially positioned for muscle sensing (magnetomyography) in wearables, with a longer path to portable MEG-class brain imaging. Sonera holds approximately eight patent filings assigned to it on ADFMR sensor architectures and wearable biomagnetic sensing devices.

Sonera had no FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, no Investigational Device Exemption, and no 510(k) clearance at the point of acquisition. The company was pre-clinical.

Apple’s pre-Sonera BCI positioning

Apple’s public BCI footprint before the Sonera deal consisted of three layers, none of which involved Apple-owned neural sensing.

Layer 1: patent. Apple filed a USPTO patent titled “Biosignal Sensing Device Using Dynamic Selection of Electrodes” in January 2023, published July 2023. The patent covers ear-canal electrodes in AirPods-class devices capable of measuring EEG, EMG, EOG, ECG, GSR, and blood volume pulse, with AI-driven dynamic selection of the best-signal electrode based on individual ear anatomy. No AirPods product carrying these electrodes has shipped.

Layer 2: protocol. On 13 May 2025 Apple published the BCI Human Interface Device (BCI HID) protocol as an accessibility extension to iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and visionOS 26, providing native operating-system support for third-party implanted BCIs to control iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro. Synchron was the launch partner for the protocol and remains the first BCI operator with native Apple integration.

Layer 3: hosting. In October 2025 Cognixion, a Santa Barbara-based BCI company, announced a feasibility clinical study integrating its non-invasive EEG-based Nucleus bio-sensing hub with Apple Vision Pro for patient populations including ALS, spinal cord injury, stroke-related speech impairment, and traumatic brain injury. The Cognixion study is Cognixion-led. Apple’s role was providing hardware and accessibility APIs, not a formal Apple partnership or investment.

None of the three layers involved Apple owning proprietary neural-sensor IP or a neural-sensor hardware team. Sonera changes that.

Why the acquisition matters

The Sonera deal is Apple’s first known neural-sensor acquisition. Prior Apple health-hardware acquisitions include Beddit (sleep sensors, May 2017), Emotient (facial-emotion AI, January 2016), and AI Music (adaptive audio, February 2022). None involved neural signals or brain imaging.

Sonera’s ADFMR magnetometer is not a shipping brain-imaging product. The publicly demonstrated capability is weak biomagnetic-field sensing, muscle-signal first (MMG) with the brain-imaging application as the aspirational roadmap. The S1 chip’s near-term commercial path is wearable muscle sensing, not consumer MEG. The Apple deal is best understood as a talent-plus-IP acqui-hire rather than a growth-stage bet on shipping consumer MEG in the next 24 months. The US$11 million seed and the absence of any disclosed Series A round support that reading.

The competitive frame the acquisition sets up is clearer than the near-term product path. Meta unveiled the Neural Band at Meta Connect on 17 September 2025, a surface-EMG wristband bundled with Ray-Ban Display AI glasses at US$799. Meta’s neural sensing is muscle-derived at the wrist. Apple, with Sonera, now owns a magnetometer technology capable of muscle-signal sensing at chip scale, in an ear-worn or wrist-worn form factor that Apple already ships (AirPods, Apple Watch). The head-to-head with Meta at the muscle-signal sensor layer is direct.

The non-surgical BCI operator field Apple is also joining includes Merge Labs (US$252 million seed, OpenAI-backed, exclusive Butterfly Embedded ultrasound-on-chip supply as of 1 September 2026), Subsense (Ray Kurzweil advisor from 2 September 2026, nanoparticle intranasal delivery), Neurable (non-invasive EEG earbuds), and the quiet Kernel (Bryan Johnson, MEG helmet). Sonera moves Apple into the same taxonomy.

How the deal surfaced

Apple did not announce the acquisition. It surfaced through the European Commission’s DMA acquisitions database, an Article 14 disclosure regime that requires designated gatekeeper platforms to notify the Commission of any acquisition of a company providing services in the digital sector, professional services to businesses, or data collection technology, regardless of transaction value. The Commission publishes the notifications on a public database. Apple’s Sonera notification appeared on 8 September 2026 with a deal-completion date of May 2026.

The Sonera notification is one of the first substantive brain-adjacent acquisitions surfaced by the DMA disclosure regime rather than by voluntary corporate announcement or leak. Regulatory-required disclosure of platform acquisitions is a mechanism the BCI operator field will need to watch. Any future Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, or Microsoft BCI-adjacent acquisition of similar sub-materiality scale should surface first on the same EC database.

Not disclosed

Purchase price, deal structure (cash, stock, mixed), executive continuity of Deka, Labanowski, or Salahuddin into Apple, product roadmap, and Apple’s intended integration of ADFMR sensors into AirPods, Apple Watch, Vision Pro, or a new form factor are not disclosed. Whether Salahuddin retains a UC Berkeley faculty role alongside Apple is not disclosed. Any Sonera peer-reviewed clinical data on brain-signal magnetometry (as distinct from Salahuddin lab papers on ADFMR physics) has not been located in public search. Apple’s response to any follow-up media questions on the Sonera deal has not been reported as of publication.

What to watch

Apple’s WWDC 2027 keynote. Any Apple-owned biosignal sensor announcement in AirPods, Apple Watch, or a new form factor over the next 15 months would signal that the Sonera IP has moved from acquisition to product roadmap. WWDC in June 2027 is the natural surfacing point.

Founder continuity. Whether Deka, Labanowski, or Salahuddin appear on Apple career pages or Apple patent filings is a hard signal. Prior Beddit and Emotient acquisitions retained key personnel for one to three years. A public LinkedIn or Apple filing signal from the Sonera team would indicate whether the acquisition is treated as ongoing hardware programme or as pure IP absorption.

Meta’s response. A Neural Band 2 product, an acquisition of a similar sensor company, or a research disclosure on a new modality over the next six months would confirm this move triggers a category race at the consumer neural-sensor layer.

Synchron’s platform relationship with Apple. Synchron partnered with Apple on the May 2025 BCI HID accessibility protocol. Apple now owns a competing sensor technology. Whether this changes the relationship or whether the accessibility work remains complementary to Apple’s Sonera hardware bet is the first partnership signal to watch.

Follow-on DMA disclosures. A second BCI-adjacent acquisition from Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, or Microsoft surfaced by the same regime would move the DMA database from a one-off disclosure into a category signal.
