Penn's AI app lets epilepsy patients chat with their brain monitors

A University of Pennsylvania app let 13 epilepsy patients in hospital text questions to the system reading their brain activity and mark its seizure alarms as right or wrong, in a study published in Nature Medicine on 13 October 2026. In a simulation run afterwards, retraining on those answers cut false alarms by 80 per cent. Penn holds a provisional patent, has named no commercial partner, and is preparing a Parkinson's study.

Keith Thomas can feel his dog: Feinstein's three-year double neural bypass lands in Nature Medicine

On 16 July 2026, Nature Medicine put on its cover a three-year follow-up of Keith Thomas of Massapequa, New York, who was implanted with five microelectrode arrays in March 2023 as the first participant in the Feinstein Institutes' 'double neural bypass' trial. The Chad Bouton team's paper reports that Thomas can now feed himself, drink from a cup, feel touch on his right wrist, and pet his dog Bow, with strength and sensation gains persisting more than two years after the stimulation was switched off.

A man with ALS has used his speech brain implant at home for nearly two years, mostly on his own

Casey Harrell, who has ALS, used a UC Davis intracortical speech BCI at home for more than 3,800 hours over 22 months without researchers present. Nature Medicine published the case on 15 June 2026.
