China approves its first home-grown brainstem hearing implant for children

China's National Medical Products Administration approved Zhejiang Nurotron's WH-01A auditory brainstem implant on 19 October 2026. Developed with Wu Hao's team at Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, it is approved for children aged 2 to under 6 who lost their hearing before learning to speak and cannot use a cochlear implant because of a severely malformed inner ear or a missing cochlear nerve. In the US, the only approved auditory brainstem implant is limited to patients aged 12 and over with neurofibromatosis type 2.

Chinese paraplegic patient regains partial sensation and movement one year after world-first combined Beinao-1 BCI and brain-spine interface surgery

A paraplegic patient who in May 2025 became the world's first to simultaneously receive the semi-invasive Beinao No.1 brain-computer interface and a temporally programmed spinal cord stimulation system has improved from complete to incomplete spinal cord injury (ASIA Grade A to ASIA Grade C) after one year of staged rehabilitation, the Xuanwu Hospital Capital Medical University team disclosed on 22 May 2026.

UChicago Medicine joins Precision Neuroscience's clinical research network with Layer 7 sensorimotor partnership

Precision Neuroscience and UChicago Medicine announced on April 30 the launch of a clinical research partnership focused on AI-driven sensorimotor function and neuroprosthetics. The collaboration uses Precision's Layer 7 Cortical Interface, the FDA 510(k)-cleared high-density microelectrode array, and is the second material Precision institutional move of 2026, following the company's January integration with Medtronic's StealthStation surgical navigation system.
