Huashan Hospital, Fudan University
Shanghai teaching hospital affiliated with Fudan University and the clinical base for three Chinese invasive brain-computer interface programmes: Neuracle, StairMed with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and NeuroXess. It began commercial implants of Neuracle's approved NEO-ONE SCI in July 2026.
Overview
Huashan Hospital, affiliated with Fudan University, was founded in 1907 and hosts one of China’s National Neurological Disease Medical Centers. Its president is Mao Ying. In June 2025 the Shanghai government named three local BCI companies with in-hospital partnerships at Huashan: Neuracle, NeuroXess and StairMed.
BCI programmes
Neuracle: Huashan was one of three sites, with Xuanwu Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital, in the trial programme behind the NMPA’s March 2026 approval of NEO-ONE SCI. Huashan filed its medical insurance pricing on 28 April 2026, and on 13 July its neurosurgeons performed a commercial implant that Chinese state media described as a world first.
StairMed and CEBSIT: an investigator-initiated trial of the ultra-flexible penetrating implant developed at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ brain science centre in Shanghai began at Huashan on 25 March 2025. StairMed disclosed 18 cumulative implants on 20 July 2026.
NeuroXess: Huashan is the collaborating site for the Triple-Full registration trial (NCT07720882), which began on 7 July 2026 with an estimated 32 participants and an estimated primary completion date of 30 January 2027. Its design is close to the trial behind Neuracle’s approval.
Why it matters
One hospital now holds an approved implant in paid use, a penetrating-electrode trial and a registration trial for a second hand-function implant. For companies weighing Chinese clinical partners, Huashan is where approval, insurance filing and paid procedures have already run end to end.
