Precision Neuroscience appoints John Donoghue as scientific advisor

John Donoghue is the founding scientist of the brain-computer interface programme that first put a Utah microelectrode array into the motor cortex of a paralysed young man named Matthew Nagle on 22 June 2004, that produced the 2006 Nature cover paper on cursor and prosthetic-arm control from single-neuron ensembles, and that ran the 2012 demonstration of Cathy Hutchinson drinking coffee from a bottle for the first time in fifteen years using a Utah array paired with a DLR robotic limb. On Thursday 23 July 2026 he announced he is joining Precision Neuroscience, a New York-based company whose thousand-and-twenty-four-electrode Layer 7 array sits on the surface of the brain and never penetrates it, as a scientific advisor. Donoghue is now Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience, Cognitive and Psychological Sciences, and Engineering at Brown University, a fellow of the National Academy of Medicine, and the recipient of the 2026 Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. He has spent, in his own words, “more than thirty years trying to get signals out of the brain and turn them into useful outputs to restore movement, control, and communication for people with paralysis.” The company he has just joined was co-founded in 2021 by Ben Rapoport (an ex-Neuralink founding-team member from 2016 to 2018), Michael Mager, Demetrios Papageorgiou and Mark Hettick, on an explicit thesis that the surface of the cortex is where the field should be reading from. What Donoghue is publicly endorsing, then, is not just a company. It is the architectural bet that his own Cyberkinetics and BrainGate work spent twenty years developing an alternative to.

What the announcement actually reports

Precision’s GlobeNewswire release on 23 July 2026 identifies Donoghue’s role verbatim: “will advise Precision’s scientific and engineering teams on device design, signal decoding, and clinical strategy.” The appointment is a Scientific Advisor role, not a board seat, not a chief science officer position (Rapoport holds that title), and not a full Scientific Advisory Board chair. Compensation and equity terms are not disclosed. The effective date is not specified in the release. The only Precision executive quoted is Rapoport, whose framing carries the whole strategic payload: “Few people have shaped the field of brain-computer interfaces as profoundly as John Donoghue. Everything we’re building at Precision extends his work - only now, we’re reading those same signals from the surface of the brain without penetrating it. We couldn’t ask for a better partner to help us make an impact.” Donoghue’s own on-record framing is worth reading in full: “I’ve spent more than thirty years trying to get signals out of the brain and turn them into useful outputs to restore movement, control, and communication for people with paralysis. One of the things I want to do at this stage in my career is make sure that the BCI field advances. Precision has one of the most promising approaches I’ve seen. They’ve thought carefully about the whole system - from the electrodes to the electronics to the signal processing to what people with paralysis need to lead a more independent life. I look forward to working with Precision’s team to get this technology out into the world, where it can help people.”

Precision restates the company’s operational scale in the same release: the Layer 7 cortical surface array has now been used in “almost 100 patients across leading academic medical centers,” the company has raised approximately US$180 million from investors, holds FDA 510(k) clearance for the Layer 7 array (up to 30-day intraoperative use), and is targeting a patient population of an estimated 315,000 Americans living with ALS, spinal cord injury, or brainstem stroke. No new funding round is announced with the Donoghue appointment. The appointment lands two days after Precision’s 21 July 2026 announcement, which Inside BCI covered, that non-paralysed neurosurgical patients had used Layer 7 to play Mario Kart, Pong and Fruit Ninja and to scroll Instagram and answer FaceTime calls with their thoughts.

Who John Donoghue is, briefly

Donoghue’s academic biography sits at the origin of the modern high-channel clinical brain-computer interface field. He co-founded Cyberkinetics Neurotechnology Systems in 2001 with Mijail Serruya, Gerhard Friehs, and Nicholas Hatsopoulos, and served as its chief scientific officer. Cyberkinetics was the corporate vehicle that ran the BrainGate pilot trial under FDA IDE. The Utah microelectrode array that BrainGate uses was invented by Richard Normann at the University of Utah in 1989. Cyberkinetics wound down in two steps in the late 2000s: the hardware business was sold to Blackrock Microsystems (now Blackrock Neurotech) for approximately US$982,000 in 2008, and the BrainGate IP was sold to Jeffrey Stibel for less than US$1 million in April 2009, becoming the private BrainGate Co. BrainGate itself continued as an academic-clinical consortium, now anchored by Leigh Hochberg at Massachusetts General Hospital with sites at Brown, Stanford, Case Western Reserve, Providence VA, UC Davis, Emory, and (since May 2026) Baylor and Rice.

The 22 June 2004 first BrainGate implant in Matthew Nagle, and the 2006 Nature paper (Hochberg, Serruya, Friehs, Mukand, Saleh, Caplan, Branner, Chen, Penn, Donoghue; Nature 442:164-171) that reported the first neural-ensemble control of external devices from a human implanted with a Utah array, are the historical outputs the current Precision release is publicly claiming direct lineage to. Cathy Hutchinson’s May 2012 Nature paper on the DLR robotic arm and the coffee bottle is the other landmark. Both are penetrating intracortical work.

From 2015 to 2019 Donoghue served as the inaugural director of the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva, a role announced by Brown and EPFL in July 2014 before he formally moved to Switzerland in 2015. He handed over the directorship to Mary Tolikas on 1 June 2019. Subsequent Wyss Center directors have been Erwin Böttinger (April 2023) and, currently, Tracy Laabs (1 July 2026). His current external appointments include Board membership at PathMaker Neurosystems (October 2021) and the BrainGate consortium.

Why this is the strategic story of the week

The Donoghue appointment is not, on its face, a change in Precision’s product, capital position, or regulatory trajectory. It is a scientific advisor role at a company that had already raised US$180 million, cleared its device through the FDA, and put it in front of paying patients. What the appointment materially changes is the credibility architecture of the Precision cap table. Ben Rapoport, Precision’s Chief Science Officer, was one of Neuralink’s eight founding-team members in 2016 and left the company in 2018 on the thesis that the surface of the cortex offered a safer, more scalable path than the threads-into-cortex approach Elon Musk was building at Neuralink. Precision was founded in 2021 on that thesis. John Donoghue is now advising the company that is executing the direct architectural alternative to the intracortical work he spent his own career building. Rapoport’s framing on 23 July is precise about that inheritance: “Everything we’re building at Precision extends his work - only now, we’re reading those same signals from the surface of the brain without penetrating it.”

Two ex-Neuralink founders are now visibly building against Neuralink’s own bet in 2026. Ben Rapoport at Precision on the cortical-surface line. Max Hodak, another Neuralink founding-team member, at Science Corporation, which received CE mark for its subretinal photovoltaic PRIMA implant in Europe on 22 July, one day before the Donoghue announcement. Now Donoghue joining Precision concentrates BrainGate-lineage academic credibility on top of the ex-Neuralink founder-density that Precision has been quietly building. No other private commercial brain-computer interface company in the field has assembled this combination of academic-clinical foundational figures and industrial-founding-team departures on a single scientific advisory. Neuralink itself had comparable founder density in 2016; most of that team has since dispersed. Precision has, over the past year, added Vanessa Tolosa (another of Neuralink’s founding-team members, as SVP R&D from June 2025), Vivek Pinto (former FDA CDRH Division Director, as Director of Medical Affairs from June 2025), and now Donoghue to its scientific and leadership bench in a sequence that lands roughly eighteen months before Precision is expected to reach first implantation of a chronic Layer 7 in early 2028.

The Wyss and ABILITY tension worth naming

The one dimension of this appointment the wire coverage of 23 July has not touched, and that Inside BCI thinks is worth naming, is that John Donoghue was the founding director of the Wyss Center for Bio and Neuroengineering in Geneva during the years the surface-electrode brain-computer interface platform that eventually became ABILITY Neurotech was being developed. ABILITY spun out of the Wyss Center in March 2025 with approximately US$50 million of Wyss Center R&D investment behind it, received Dutch IMDD approval on 26 May 2026 for its chronic ALS trial at UMC Utrecht, reached first-in-human intraoperative recording at TUM University Hospital Rechts der Isar in Munich on 21 July 2026, and is targeting its first chronic implantation in the third quarter of 2026. ABILITY’s device is a 128-channel sub-scalp electrocorticography array with a transcutaneous optical data link. Precision’s Layer 7 is a 1,024-electrode thin-film cortical surface array. Both are surface-electrode BCIs. Both target the same clinical population of ALS, spinal cord injury, and stroke. Both position themselves as the safer, more scalable alternative to intracortical penetrating implants. They are direct architectural competitors.

Neither Precision’s release nor any Wyss Center statement located in verifiable sources addresses whether Donoghue retains any residual advisory relationship with the Wyss Center or with ABILITY Neurotech. Rapoport’s on-record framing is worth reading a second time in this light: “Everything we’re building at Precision extends his work.” The framing does not name ABILITY. The Precision appointment reads as a public endorsement of the surface-array approach at the moment ABILITY is entering its first chronic human trial. That is not a scandal, and Inside BCI is not framing it as one. It is a real and unresolved question about how the Wyss Center’s spin-out portfolio strategy interacts with its founding director’s post-tenure advisory choices, and it is a question that ABILITY, Wyss, and Precision have all so far declined to address publicly.

What to watch

Watch whether the Wyss Center or ABILITY Neurotech issues any statement about the Donoghue appointment in the coming days. Silence from either institution through the end of July would be a signal that the relationship is cleaner than the surface tension suggests. A statement from either party naming the Donoghue transition explicitly would be a signal that the relationship needs public management.

Watch Precision’s Investigational Device Exemption filing for the chronic version of Layer 7. Chief Clinical Officer Jayme Strauss told MobiHealthNews on 21 July that Precision expects to reach first chronic implant in early 2028. Donoghue’s specific area of clinical-strategy expertise is the transition from acute intraoperative BCI work to chronic implantation. The timing of an IDE filing announcement, and whether Donoghue is named in that announcement, would tell the market whether the Precision-Donoghue advisory relationship is a symbolic honour or an operational hand on the tiller.

Watch for any next Precision founder-collector appointment. Precision has, over the past year, added Vanessa Tolosa and Vivek Pinto to its leadership bench, and has now added Donoghue as scientific advisor. If the pattern continues, the next names to watch would be from the late Krishna Shenoy’s Stanford lab (Frank Willett in particular), from the Brown/Providence VA team that ran the Hutchinson study, or from the wider BrainGate site network. Any one of those would concentrate the credibility architecture further.

Watch the funder response. Precision has not announced a new financing round with the Donoghue appointment. The appointment is exactly the kind of scientific-credibility signal a company would carry into a Series D conversation at a step-up valuation from the December 2024 Series C. The next twelve weeks of Precision’s public disclosure cadence are worth watching for a funding-round announcement that lands on Donoghue’s advisory shoulders.
