Ray Kurzweil, the futurist and inventor who has argued for two decades that brain-computer interfaces will arrive through molecular-scale machines rather than through skull-drilled implants, has joined Palo Alto-based Subsense as Product and Vision Advisor. Subsense unveiled the appointment on the evening of 2 September 2026 at “The Subsense Annual Forum: AI Meets the Brain,” held at the company’s Palo Alto headquarters, with Kurzweil physically present.
Subsense is a preclinical-stage BCI startup founded in 2022 by CEO Tetiana Aleksandrova and co-founder Artem Sokolov. The company is developing a non-surgical BCI based on nanoparticles delivered intranasally, paired with an external wearable headset containing magnetic coils. The system is bidirectional. It both reads neural activity and delivers targeted stimulation. Total seed financing is US$27 million led by Sokolov’s own Golden Falcon Capital. The system remains in mouse-model work.
What Kurzweil said
Onstage at the Palo Alto forum, Kurzweil placed the appointment inside his long-standing merger thesis: “Ultimately, we want to merge [the smartphone] with the brain.” He added: “The whole point of humans is to go to greater frontiers, expand who we are.”
Kurzweil linked his historical writing on molecular-scale interfaces to Subsense’s technical approach: “For years, I have believed that the convergence of AI, nanotechnology and neuroscience could fundamentally change how humans interact with technology. Subsense is pursuing an approach that brings those fields together in a particularly compelling way, with the potential to move brain-computer interfaces beyond today’s surgical constraints and, over time, toward much broader applications.”
Aleksandrova framed the appointment as ideological continuity: “Ray has been thinking about the convergence of the brain and technology since long before most of the technologies needed to pursue it existed. What makes this relationship so exciting is that we are now at a point where some of those ideas can move from predictions about the future into real scientific questions. We are incredibly proud to have Ray advising us as we work to answer them.”
What Kurzweil brings and does not bring
Kurzweil is 78. He is not taking an operating role. Product and Vision Advisor is the softest tier of corporate attachment. What he brings is symbolic capital. The 2003-vintage nano-BCI theorist is now formally attached to a commercial-stage company operationalising that thesis.
The Subsense advisory sits alongside Kurzweil’s other current active affiliations. He is co-founder of Beyond Imagination, a humanoid robotics company. He has served on the board of United Therapeutics Corporation as Independent Director since 2002. He is identified in Subsense’s own materials as “a principal researcher and AI visionary at Google,” his affiliation with the company since 2012. Whether the Google role is concurrent with or has been reduced since taking the Subsense advisory is not clarified.
Publicly, this is Kurzweil’s first formal advisory or board position at a brain-computer interface operator. He has not previously attached his name to Neuralink, Kernel, Synchron, Paradromics, Precision Neuroscience, Blackrock, or Motif.
The technology
Subsense’s platform proposes a molecular route into the brain, distinct from every other named modality in the commercial-development BCI cohort. Intracortical operators (Neuralink, Paradromics, Blackrock, StairMed) drill or thread through the skull. Cortical-surface operators (Precision Neuroscience, ABILITY Neurotech, CorTec, Weiling Medical) sit arrays on the brain surface via small cranial access. Endovascular operators (Synchron, Nankai University with Sanbo Brain Hospital) route through blood vessels. Ultrasound operators (Merge Labs, Gestala) read acoustically through the skull. Non-invasive EEG operators (Neurable, MindMaze) sit sensors on the scalp. Subsense proposes a molecular route. Nanoparticles delivered intranasally cross the blood-brain barrier, and an external magnetic-coil headset reads and stimulates the neurons they attach to.
Initial clinical targets stated by the company are Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. Academic partners named are UC Santa Cruz and ETH Zurich. Subsense products are not authorised, cleared, or approved by the FDA. The system is still in mice.
The founding team
Tetiana Aleksandrova is Ukrainian-born and previously co-founded Neiry, a non-invasive EEG-headband company. She founded Subsense in 2022 after relocating to the US. Artem Sokolov is Founder and General Partner of Golden Falcon Capital, the fund that has led both Subsense rounds. Sokolov is also founder of the robotics startup Humanoid. He was named EY Entrepreneur of the Year in 2021 and is an early investor across a portfolio that includes SpaceX, Asana, SoFi, Coursera, Lemonade, and Digital Ocean.
Additional named executives include Scott Meek (Head of R&D, MIT background, prior work on beta-amyloid contrast agents) and Cyril Eleftheriou (neurotech lead). Total staff size is not publicly disclosed.
Where this sits in the BCI operator landscape
The Kurzweil appointment lands one week after Merge Labs and Butterfly Network’s exclusive Butterfly Embedded chip-supply deal (announced 1 September 2026) established the US-listed industrial supply chain for ultrasound BCI. In the same week, CorTec announced its second FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for the Brain Interchange implant (communication in non-progressive quadriplegia), and Cortical Labs elevated co-founder Brett Kagan to CEO. Six distinct physical modalities into the brain (intracortical, cortical-surface, endovascular, ultrasound, molecular, non-invasive EEG) now have named operators inside the commercial-development cohort.
For Subsense specifically, the Kurzweil appointment is the first tier-1 general-audience media moment for the company. Prior coverage was trade-press only (BioSpace, Medical Design & Outsourcing, Longevity Technology, Axios Pro Biotech).

Kurzweil’s equity in Subsense, his time commitment, and his product-development scope have not been detailed. Subsense’s headcount has not been publicly stated. No FDA Breakthrough Device Designation or Investigational Device Exemption has been announced for the company. Peer-reviewed publications from the Subsense team on the nanoparticle mechanism have not surfaced in public search. The mechanism by which the intranasally-delivered nanoparticles are cleared from the brain, and the safety profile for chronic re-dosing, are not addressed in current public materials. Whether Subsense remains fully funded through Golden Falcon Capital, or plans an institutional Series A led by an outside firm, is not stated.
What to watch
Whether Subsense publishes peer-reviewed preclinical data on the nanoparticle system in the coming quarters. The commercial claim rests on a molecular mechanism that has no FDA-cleared precedent in any indication. Peer-reviewed data is the first hard technical read.
Whether Subsense raises an independent institutional Series A led by a fund outside Golden Falcon Capital. The current US$27 million is all from Sokolov’s own vehicle. An arms-length institutional round would validate the technology beyond a co-founder-funded runway.
Whether Kurzweil takes similar advisor or board seats at other non-surgical BCI operators. A single Subsense advisor role reads as ideological alignment. A cluster of non-surgical BCI advisor roles would read as Kurzweil formally positioning his personal brand across the non-surgical cohort in the run-up to his stated 2030s timeline for BCI-AI merger.
Whether Subsense moves the platform out of mouse-model work in a defined public timeline. Preclinical timelines in molecular BCI have no established base rate. The first-in-human data, if and when it lands, is the first operational read on the entire nanoparticle-BCI category.
