Boston Scientific
Medical technology company whose neuromodulation business covers deep brain, spinal cord, sacral and peripheral nerve stimulation. It completed its purchase of peripheral nerve stimulation specialist Nalu Medical in January 2026, and its deep brain stimulation implants host CereGate's Parkinson's gait therapy in a US trial.
Overview
Boston Scientific is a medical technology company headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Its neuromodulation business includes Vercise deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord stimulation for chronic pain and the Axonics sacral neuromodulation line for urinary incontinence. It reported neuromodulation organic sales growth of 15 per cent for the first quarter of 2026.
Nalu Medical
Boston Scientific agreed in October 2025 to acquire Nalu Medical, whose peripheral nerve stimulation system pairs a permanent implant with an external wearable activator to treat chronic pain. The deal completed in January 2026, with Boston Scientific paying about $533 million. Seven months after the Nalu agreement, Medtronic agreed to buy SPR Therapeutics, a second peripheral nerve stimulation specialist acquired by a large neuromodulation incumbent.
Host for third-party therapies
CereGate, a Munich company, is testing a therapy for freezing of gait in Parkinson’s disease that runs on deep brain stimulation implants patients already have. Its US trial accepts only patients whose implant is powered by one of two Boston Scientific pulse generators, Gevia or Genus R16, and pairs CereGate’s software with Boston Scientific programmers. On 14 October 2026 CereGate said an unnamed US medtech company had led its Series C. It has not said whether Boston Scientific led the round or whether the two companies have a commercial agreement.
Why it matters
Boston Scientific extended its pain portfolio by buying an FDA-cleared specialist, Nalu. Its deep brain stimulation implants already in patients also give software developers such as CereGate a route to new therapies without further surgery. Whether that arrangement becomes a disclosed commercial relationship is the next signal.
