Subsense

Palo Alto startup developing a non-surgical brain-computer interface that pairs intranasally delivered nanoparticles with a wearable magnetic-coil headset. It has raised US$27 million in seed funding, named Ray Kurzweil Product and Vision Advisor in September 2026, and is still in mouse studies.

Overview

Subsense was founded in 2022 by chief executive Tetiana Aleksandrova, who previously co-founded the EEG headband company Neiry, and Artem Sokolov, founder and general partner of Golden Falcon Capital. Golden Falcon has led both of the company’s seed rounds, which total US$27 million. Scott Meek heads research and development.

Technology

The system is designed to both read and stimulate. Nanoparticles delivered through the nose are meant to cross the blood-brain barrier, and an external headset with magnetic coils reads and stimulates the neurons they attach to. Stated initial clinical targets are Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy, with UC Santa Cruz and ETH Zurich as academic partners. The work remains in mice, and no FDA Breakthrough Device Designation or Investigational Device Exemption has been announced.

Latest

On 2 September 2026 Subsense named Ray Kurzweil its Product and Vision Advisor at a company forum in Palo Alto. The role is advisory, with no operating duties, and his equity and time commitment have not been disclosed.

Why it matters

Subsense adds a molecular route to the non-surgical BCI field alongside ultrasound (Merge Labs, Gestala) and EEG (Neurable). Its commercial case rests on a mechanism with no FDA-cleared precedent in any indication. As of September 2026 no peer-reviewed data on the nanoparticle system had surfaced, and how the particles clear from the brain, and the safety of repeat dosing, had not been addressed publicly. All funding so far has come from a co-founder’s fund, so an outside-led Series A would be the arm’s-length test of investor appetite.
